Holiday Checklist: Get Your Home Ready for Guests

home tips for the holidaysIs your home ready for holiday guests? The holidays are a busy time for entertaining and hosting out-of-town family and friends, so your home will probably see more traffic now than at other times of the year. Make sure it’s welcoming and comfortable for your guests by running through this holiday home checklist. Bonus: This list is also great for making sure your home is ready for showings if you’re selling!

  • Start small. Walk your house with a notepad and write down all the little annoyances- a loose doorknob, a blown-out light bulb, a squeaky stair, the toilet handle that you have to jiggle just right- and take care of them before your guests arrive.
  • Recaulk bathroom fixtures- Old peeling, cracked, or discolored caulk is not only an eyesore, but can also result in leaks. Recaulking is quick and easy, plus it’s like an instant facelift for your bathroom.
  • Test your heater. If you haven’t already been running your heater, test it before company arrives! If it needs servicing, better to do it now than when you have a house full of guests feeling like popsicles!
  • Deal with plumbing issues– Having visitors in your home can exacerbate issues that you didn’t think were a problem when it was just you. With more people using the plumbing system, it’s more likely that slow drains will get backed up, for instance. The garbage disposal is also under much more stress with all that holiday cooking, so if you have any doubts as to its reliability, deal with them now. You don’t want to have a flood on your hands come Christmas morning!

These may seem like minor issues when you’re living with them day-to-day, but they will make an impression on guests or potential home buyers. Taking care of them will make your home appear much better-maintained. If you’re ready to sell, The Premier Group Keller Williams Realty in Woodstock can help, so call us today!
